The Hays Code (officially the Motion Picture Production Code) was a strict set of moral guidelines that governed the content of almost all American movies from 1934 to 1968. Instituted by major Hollywood studios to avoid government censorship and scandals, it banned profanity, suggestive nudity, sexual perversion (homosexuality), etc.
